Continuing with the discussion crafting a Genealogy Strategic Plan, Today’s Tip is Goal #2
Be Inclusive and Interactive
I set this as my second goal for a number of reasons that I think most folks will see value in as well. First, if we want participation, then we need to be inclusive not exclusive. We need to be expansive and not narrow. Open and welcoming … to all family members. Old, young, near, far, closely related and distantly related. We must be welcoming to what we tend to call ‘traditional’ and ‘non-traditional’ families.
We must also be inclusive in our trees. I once had someone question why I was so intent on adding the full families of in-laws. It surprised me, but I explained that while my wife’s family may not be ‘blood’ to me, they are certainly ‘blood’ to my children. This person disagreed as he had a really bizarre definition of family based on patriarchal thinking, but I agreed to disagree. Needless to say, I think all trees should treat the in-laws like family, not like outlaws 🙂
Second, if we want to be successful in our efforts, we need to do all we can to make our work interactive!
This goal ties in very closely to the goal of Have Fun! People have much more fun if they can be a part of the activities and not just a sideline observer. It is more fun to play the game than listen to a recap or just watch it.
So interactivity is a key for me.
My basic key on this one is that I made our family tree on a website that has now become our family history social network. We post fun things in addition to just our tree. We do video, audio, questions, polls, and lots of fun stories. Birthdays, anniversaries, and other celebrations are noted on the site and celebrated.
When I send my weekly Your Family Update emails, I also ask for input. I always ask for help. I always offer an incentive. I always highlight those who have helped out in some way in the past week.
I use names, names, and more names! After all, it is fun to read your own name in a story or an article.
So, there you have it …. goal number two — Inclusivity and Interactivity! Crucial to having fun!
