Today’s Tip is Goal #5: Focus on How to Maximize and Increase Family Participation
While I knew I personally loved family history and genealogy, I also knew that many in the family did not understand it, were unsure of how to get started in it, or participate.
So my goal was to Increase participation by more members of the family.
My primary strategy for this goal was to communicate, communicate, communicate, then communicate some more and then over communicate! You get the idea!
While I did not allow myself to become a pest (at least by my standards) I did set up a simple calendar to follow to stay in touch for communications.
I wanted to educate, entertain, and draw folks in and draw folks out. Get them into a comfort zone that this was non-threatening and nothing but FUN!
So I send a weekly email out. I call it Your Family Update and I give just that …. a weekly update and some stories about what is up and what I have learned or happened across for the family. Sometimes it is long. Often it is short, but it is always weekly.
These updates have caused much discussion and raised participation in the family website and email a lot!
Now this style of communication might not work for you or your family, but I do think it is important to have increasing participation as a goal. No one can carry the family load by themselves …. but to gain assistants and assistance …. we need to show we are open, accessible, and that we WANT others to participate with us!
