Today’s Goal #6 is simple: If you are going to do this, do this right, so DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT!
That means you should have as a goal to document each of your findings in your tree and electronically attach them to the appropriate person or persons.
If our work is to stand the test of time, as it should, anyone coming after us should be able to pick up our work, feel fully comfortable with where we were when we ended our efforts, and they can pick up from there.
This means that each person, item, fact, figure, etc. we add we need to be able to offer documentation as to the source of our statements.
This is also extremely important when and if we get into disagreements as to some fact, name, action (marriage, divorce, etc) we can, with a certain amount of ease, pull our reasoning together and make a strong argument for our position.
A good example of this need happened to me just this past week. I was reading a book on early Ohio immigration. In it the author made a statement regarding the origin of the earliest Czech immigrants to Cleveland. I disagreed with his statement and I was very happy that I could simply go to my tree, look up that individual and right there were the documents that shored up my argument. Hard to fight with birth registers, marriage records, etc!
So, document, document, document!
Our ancestors deserve it … and it is crucial as we go Onward To Our Past,
