Today’s Tip is Genealogy Strategic Plan goal #7 — Focus on two-way dialog in all your communications.
At times I find myself getting caught up in telling my stories, telling about my findings, telling about my current trace that is on-going. Then I have to catch myself and remember my goal of making our genealogy communications two-way!
Being cognizant of and encouraging to communication that is truly a dialog is precious to our work!
I learn far more by listening than by reading. Far more by asking than by telling.
I discover far more mistakes and errors in approach by dialog and debate than by bull-heading charging forward on my own.
Once folks understand that you are an open and approachable person. That you welcome questions, opinions, and dialog, then the information and the data and the goodness flows!
One way communications tend to work like a dam. You can regulate all you want to release, but when folks come back to you and hit that concrete barrier, then they stop.
I remember what one of my mentors told me long ago. In most things in our lives, he said, we get one chance! One chance with people. If it goes well, you can interact with them. Then if you do really, really well, you might get a chance to try and do it again. But that next time will be your one chance all over again, so stay open, friendly and approachable.
Sure works for me in genealogy!
So pepper your communications with questions. Salt it with open-ended comments. Spice it up with asking for opinions and then for dessert ….. ask for critique of your efforts so far.
If the path is open both ways, the benefits to your efforts will be awesome, I promise!
