Several readers lately have asked about some type of clearinghouse for materials available for genealogy, especially in the little studied Cleveland Czech community.
My goal is to maintain as much as possible electronically and provide it here at the Onward To Our Past® website, but copyright laws do not always allow for that type of sharing. Plus of course there are the places that I have encountered lately (academic libraries primarily) that have no desire to share their holdings at all if you are not onsite. Me? I’d much rather share knowledge than hide it away with no one else being able to access it, learn from it, or read it.
One effort I am doing is loading all of my physical genealogy book holdings on LibraryThing.com. While I am obviously not loading every book I own (who cares what I like to read for my escape literature (although if you I happen to enjoy mysteries and devour anything by Michael McGarrity, William Kent Krueger, and Steve Hamiliton), I have loaded over 100 of my genealogy library holdings on LibraryThing for anyone to see on my bookshelf, OnwardToOurPast (all one word).
I know this is not the perfect solution, but since I am not a library nor am I able to scan and reproduce each book, at least my fans can see what I have and if they are interested I can let them know what a book is like, what information it contains, etc. At least it is a start for my books, several of which are quite rare, such as my original copies of works by Maclean, Miller, Jacob Riis.
Would reviews of these books be helpful? Keywords? How could a list be more useful to you?
Anything I write that is published, I will post here for anyone to read soon after it is published. These include the articles I have written for the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, Ohio Genealogical Society, Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International, Greater Cleveland Genealogical Society and others.
So tell me …. what else would you like to see in a depository?
Would links to active, worthwhile sites be good or is that overdone elsewhere? I have included a few links at the bottom of each special page on my site, like the Czech/Bohemia page, but should I load in more? Is this helpful?
I agree that a more robust depository is needed ….. but what should it look like?
Let me know and we can go Onward To Our Past together!
