Scott Phillips’s Genealogy Knowledge Hubs, Resources, Advice, Hints, and Tips on the Web
Recently, several readers have asked me about what resources I have for them to use in their genealogy pursuits. Since it is Labor Day Weekend, I thought this might be a good time to save everyone a bit of labor J and put together this list of what I have on the Internet for genealogy. Perhaps best of all, each and every one of these family history, genealogy, and ancestry resources are available for free.
First, of course is my own website, Onward To Our Past® right here. There are many resources for a variety of genealogy and family history interests right here. First on the top banner you will find tabs for each of my specialty areas. Each of these tabs is what I call a ‘genealogy knowledge hub’ or center. By clicking, you can reach the knowledge hub for “Bohemia & Czech Republic Genealogy”, “Italian Genealogy”, and “Cornwall, United Kingdom Genealogy”. Additionally you can find the fun tabs of ‘Meet Your Host’ that introduces me, ‘Food & Recipes’, which features a few family favorites, and of course the tab for how to “Contact Me” with any questions or comments.
I have posted more than 400 articles at Onward To Our Past® over the years I have been posting here and there is a huge variety of information to be found in these posts.
Naturally I am most proud of the first ever translation to English of the Czech history book on the Cleveland, Ohio Czech immigrant community written in1895. You can find the press release about this exciting, year long project on Dick Eastman’s genealogy newsletter at http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2012/09/1895-czech-genealogy-resource-now-available-online-in-english.html. The book by newspaperman and author Hugo Chotek chronicles the earliest Czech immigrants and their lives. It is also reportedly the earliest book written that provided a history of any Czech immigrant community in the United States. You can find this series of eleven posts by searching ‘Hugo Chotek Section’ then all of the posts will be listed for you to read.
I have conducted interviews with selected individuals in the genealogy community as well. You can find the interviews with folks like the following:
- Dick Eastman, author and owner of Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter,
- Myra Cordrey, overall coordinator of the Cornwall Online Parish Clerks organization, and
- Alan Pateman-Jones, Director General of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
You can also find product reviews, advice, opinion pieces, and pages of my favorite genealogy tips within the pages of Onward To Our Past®.
Naturally, you can also find us on Facebook. With over 14,100 fans, we are growing and growing fast! Join us here for lots of genealogy chatter, opinions, pictures, stories, fun, and contests. Like us anytime!
Huffington Post UK: Genealogy Blogger
Well over a year ago, I was approached by Huffington Post and asked to be a regular contributor to their Huffington Post UK edition on topics of interest in genealogy, family history, and ancestry. You can find my author page at http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/scott-phillips/. This page lists, in the right hand column, all of my articles that have been published by Huffington Post. These articles cover the genealogy landscape and vary from humorous (“I used to Have a Life and Then I Started Doing Genealogy”) to useful tips (“Real World Tips for Genealogists and Family Historians”) and opinion (“Where the Hell is the Quality Movement in Genealogy?”) and dozens more.
Scott’s Journey Through Genealogy
If you have worked on your family history and genealogy for any length of time, you will recognize the brand name of FindmyPast and their parent company, BrightSolid®. Earlier this year the folks at Findmypast asked if I would be interested in writing a column for them. The result is my monthly column entitled “Scott’s Journey Through Genealogy”. You can find it at http://blog.findmypast.co.uk/category/scotts-journey-through-genealogy/. This page lists all of my monthly articles, all of which focus on helping you with your genealogy and family history.
GenealogyBank.com is one of my favorite resource sites and for years I have been a subscriber and heavy user. Almost two years ago I was asked to be a regular contributing author to their blog and newsletters. If you visit my author page for GenealogyBank, at http://blog.genealogybank.com/author/scottphillips/ you will find the beginning of nearly 40 articles. These articles feature a wide variety of topics and all illustrate how you can really enhance your family tree with the offerings that can be found in historic newspapers.
