The dog days of summer ….. is the time to take stock and Today’s Tip is: Begin your PROS and CONS of GENEALOGY List!
If you are like me, you love all the magazines, software, Societies, Clubs and groups that are out there for us genealogy folks! If I could I would have them all! But, for me, a *Real World* genealogist, I must shepherd my resources carefully. Plus, many of my subscriptions tend to come due for renewal, etc. near the end of the year, when I am SO busy! So each year around the end of July I begin my PROS and CONS of GENEALOGY list.
I build a table with four columns:
1st column is the name of the Software, Society, Site, Magazine, Subscription, Newsletter, etc. that I belong to, bought, or subscribe to.
2nd column is titled PROS. What over the year I like about this product or servcie or group.
3rd column is titled CONS. What are the shortcomings? Drawbacks?
4th column is titled USES. This I keep as a running tab of hash marks to illustrate roughly how much I use each thing. Plus I keep rough track of how much I use a resource. Do I ask for research from a Society? Do I read the newsletter? Do I call on them for help? How often do I access the site?
This gives me a running look at how much I use each thing I have invested in. Then when the renewals, etc. start to come due I have something to refer to to refresh my memory for at least about half the year. This helps me make informed decisions. It is not scientific, but it helps at a time that tends to be full of lots of happenings!
Have a great day today! May you make a fun discovery, remove a brick from a wall, or just relish your roots!
Onward To Our Past!
