Today’s Tip: American Science & Surplus.
If you are like me, you love to put together a little tool kit to have with you when you go on your genealogical travels.
In my case, I want it small and I want it cheap!
I have used American Science & Surplus (http://www.sciplus.com #888-724-7587 fax #800-934-0722) for lots of the items in my kit. They are a bit wacky at times with what they stock …. their warehouse must be a hoot and a half!
But the good news is when I read through their catalog and marvel at the fact that someone might want to buy ‘bug sucker guts’ or ‘a 12 VDC linear actuator’, I find some great stuff at reasonable prices.
Some of the kit contents I have bought, and been happy with for my genealogical travel kit are: a tiny flashlight that fits on my key ring (for highlighting those fading gravestone etchings), a really loud whistle (I am in some ‘iffy’ locations at nightfall at times), a light that I can wear on my head (ala a coal miner) so I can illuminate a gravestone and take photos or transcribe an inscription in the light), tiny soft brushes that can attach to my key chain, a mini-pocket microscope (for checking the detail on that bad letter or number on a gravestone or document), a glow-in-the-dark compass, and an old fashioned hip flask (don’t ask). Most of these for a buck or two.
What you see is what you get. I have found them honest about the quality and durability, etc.
So if you need ‘stuff’ for your kit, you might want to give these folks a look-see.
If nothing else, you might marvel, at I do, at some of the items they carry.
