Today’s Tip: If you are looking for ancestors on line … post here, post there, post everywhere!
If you are working on a family surname that has you especially stumped, but sure to post our question, status, info, etc. to every relevant message board ….. you never know which one might result in a hit later on!
When working on an elusive ancestor, I suggest that you post your query, information as to what you have discovered so far, and contact information on as many message board/online communities as you can.
Rarely is there only one message board/community that could hold that golden key to unlock some name for you!
For instance, I recently was working on a line from Cornwall. I posted on the Cornish boards, the UK boards, the England boards, and the surname boards. Then I hit the specific genealogy societies where I could post as well.
Then I came overseas to the States …. this line spent time in Ohio — so I posted on the Ohio boards that were possibilities. Then this family moved to Canada, so I did the same on Canadian boards up North!
In the States, I also post to boards in neighboring counties, since a far number of societies go by geography and I wouldn’t want to miss someone who moved out of town a few miles — or was moved to a new country when it had its’ boundaries redrawn.
I have had wonderful luck with these postings …. although they can be long time a comin’! I had two recently that were both posted several years back …. but they bore gold!
So …. post here, post there, post most anywhere you think might work!
