Today, as a little bit of Memorial Day preparations, I am going to do some volunteer photography for the website Find A Grave. (http://www.findagrave.com). It is very easy to register and use their Contributor Tools for helping with this nice, free, site.
I am going to set a flag at the Veterans Memorial at my local cemetery here in my hometown and say a pray of thanks.
Before I go, I always check in at Find A Grave and see if anyone wants photos from that cemetery. Turns out that there are four folks seeking pictures of loved ones’ grave sites. So I jot down the names and locations and will do my bit to help them out.
I have been helped by volunteers at Find A Grave myself and it has been lovely. It is really something to be able to ask for a photo from a cemetery hundreds of miles away, that you might never get to see, and have someone go out of their way and get a picture for you. So I try and return the favor when I can.
I am amazed when I see the effort many folks put into volunteering at Find A Grave! Some folks have taken thousands of photos! Cataloged who cemeteries! Amazing and wonderful.
I know there are several other sites that focus on burials, such as http://www.interment.net, but they do not seem to be as popular and complete as Find A Grave.
Of course, there are also some really terrific and complete records/search functions for individual cemeteries too. There are two I have used extensively in my work in the Cleveland area.
One is for Woodland Cemetery. Found at http://www.wcfcle.org/ the search function is great! It not only gives you the surname you are using, but those spelled similarly. A nice feature!
Another is Lake View Cemetery at http://www.lakeviewcemetery.com. Their search function is also very helpful.
I am sure there are many others too, but these are ones I have used several times and are cemeteries I visit often, either in person or online. After all, I have over 118 family interred at Woodland in Cleveland.
While I wish I could be at many of these grave sites this weekend, I will be paying my respects here and hoping my prayers find there way where they belong!
Have a good Thursday!
